Concepts For Being A Good Coach
If you’ve ever thought about coaching basketball, then you have undoubtedly chosen a great hobby, or even a career path. Before you start however, there are a few things you will need to know. Even if you have played basketball in the past, you need to know that playing and coaching are two very different things.
Secondly, another important thing is that you must really get to know everything about your players- from their strengths and weaknesses to what position would each player fit in. There are different positions in basketball, and in order to know where to position a player, you must really know them in and out. You must know your players well enough to know where their strengths are, so you can design basketball plays. Sometimes players have to change positions and should be ready to do so, but, as much as possible, keep a player at their strongest point.
Making sure that your team runs basketball drills is vital. First of all, they need the ability to run short distances with incredible bursts of speed. The ability to do so will determine whether or not they can actually win, and this ability will really help them to shine during games against stronger opponents. That being said, you will want to get to work right away.
Another biggie when it comes to basketball is dribbling. If your players do not know how to properly dribble, it will result in many penalties. There are two dribbling violations that could cause your team much distress double dribbling and traveling. To make sure such problems do not occur, it would be wise to go through drills that will help to improve the players’ dribbling skills. The drills will be tiring and boring after going over them again and again, but once the players have the techniques mastered to where they could do them in their sleep, then winning will be guaranteed. It is hard work, but getting the victory is no simple matter.
Giving team members different assignments and teaching them to work together is paramount. You should constantly remind them that there is no ‘I’ in team, and once they begin working in harmony, your team will be virtually unstoppable! The only real question now is what you’re waiting for. Sure it can be a bit intimidating, after all there are a ton of things to learn regarding coaching, and as you go along you will undoubtedly find that it is both rewarding and challenging.
You should encourage the players to play to their strengths, but also make sure that they fit well with the other team members’. Have a positive attitude with your players to keep them motivated, because a negative attitude will only cause more problems. It will take a lot of time and work to coach a team, but when you see the results of your hard work- like when your team wins the game- it definitely makes it worth it all.
