Cure That Nasty Slice Once And For All
The dreaded slice is one of the most troublesome problems for golfers of all ages and experience levels. As experience levels rise you will see it less and less, but it still rears its ugly head from time to time. While a lot of golfers focus on putting more distance on each stroke, hitting the ball straighter and staying out of the ruff will improve your score more dramatically than increasing distance.
Understanding the problem is half the battle when trying to cure any problem and it is no different when talking about the slice. When a golf ball is in the air it will fly on a path in relation to the spin it has on it. When there is more side spin than back spin the ball will slice.
While there are many reasons why the side spin of the ball can outweigh the back spin, it all comes back to how the golf ball was struck with the club. The external factors like the wind or the lie of the ball can contribute to the degree of slice on the ball, but they do not cause a ball to slice. Only how the ball was hit can do that.
Let’s look at how hitting the ball in a certain way causes side spin on the golf ball. It really comes down to two possible scenarios. The first and most obvious way is hitting the ball with a sideways motion.
When the golf club travels outside the ideal swing plain and then is pulled across the plane while coming in contact with the ball, it causes this sideways motion. This is a common problem, but also one that is fairly easy to fix with some concentration and practice. The key to fixing this problem is keeping your left arm straight and concentrating on maintaining the correct plane during the entire swing. Practice this and you will be amazed at how much it will reduce the occurrence or degree of your slice.
The second reason that you may be slicing is that your club face is open when the club strikes the ball. This causes the club to hit the ball with a glancing motion, and the ball actually rolls off the side of the club instead of skyrocketing off like a firecracker. While this is less common, it is harder to diagnose and even harder to fix. It could be due to either an inadequate turn during the swing, an early breaking in the wrist, and open club face during setup, or even an early turning of the hips. Try closing your club face at setup to see if that will decrease the amount that you actually slice. Even though that may work by lowering the amount that you slice, you still want to visit a golf pro so they can see what your underlying problem is so you can fix it.
Having a dramatic slicing problem can easily ruin a golf game, but there is no reason why you can’t fix this common problem. Reread this article and decide on what you can do to implement the tips that were outlined. Doing this will have a dramatic difference on your golf game.
