Fitness For People Over 50
Studies have shown that exercise provides many health benefits and that older adults can gain a lot by staying physically active. Even moderate exercise and physical activity can improve the health of people who are frail or who have diseases that accompany aging.
Have you heard exercise is important for older adults, but don’t know where to begin? You’re not alone. Many seniors feel discouraged by fitness barriers, such as chronic health conditions or concerns about injury or falls. If you’ve never exercised before, you may not know where to begin.
There are many ways to stay active, and no matter what your age, you can find activities that meet your fitness level, physical abilities, and needs. Always consult with your doctor prior to starting any exercise program or activity.
There are four main types of exercise and seniors need some of each. Endurance activities – like walking, swimming, or riding a bike – which build “staying power” and improve the health of the heart and circulatory system. Strengthening exercises which build muscle tissue and reduce age-related muscle loss. Stretching exercises to keep the body limber and flexible and Balance exercises to reduce the chances of a fall.
Cross-fit is a strength and conditioning brand that combines weightlifting, sprinting, gymnastics, powerlifting, kettlebell training, plyometrics, rowing, and medicine ball training. CrossFit contends that a healthy, fit person requires proficiency in each of ten general physical skills: cardiovascular/respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, agility, balance, coordination, and accuracy.
Many non-competitive bodybuilders choose not to adopt the conventional strategy, as it often results in significant unwanted fat gain during the “bulking” phase. The attempt to increase muscle mass in one’s body without any gain in fat is called clean bulking. This is the method preferred by non-competitive bodybuilders.
Local fitness centers or hospitals might be able to help you find a physical activity program that works for you. You also can check with nearby religious groups, senior and civic centers, parks, recreation associations, YMCAs, YWCAs, or even area shopping malls for exercise, wellness, or walking programs.
