Killarney Town is an Ideal Location for the Golfer.

Killarney in Ireland is an excellent choice for a golf holiday because it has four full size courses and three nine-hole courses and it also has plenty top quality accommodation to cater for all visitors.

Lackabane was opened in 1999 and is a parklands course with spectacular views of the lakes at some of the holes. It is a moderately difficult Par 72 course with many water hazards, bunkers and some severe slopes off the greens.The Irish Ryder Cup Challenge and the Ladies Open have been played on this course. It is 7050 yards (6410 metres) long.

O’Mahonys Point is probably the easiest of the three courses at the club but is, nevertheless, challenging enough. It has a good number of water hazards and bunkers and undulating greens. It is Par 72 and 6800 yards (6218 meters) long. It is renowned for its fabulous view at the 18th hole.

The Killeen course is the most important and is the course on which the big tournaments are played. It is the longest of the three courses in the club and also the most challenging with difficult hazards, long holes and fast greens. This is where the world’s top golfers like to play and The Irish Open has been held there on a number of occasions. Set in between the mountains with excellent views of the lakes the tournament makes for excellent television viewing.

The fourth 18-hole course is Beaufort Golf Resort which is located six miles west of the town in a secluded woodland setting at the base of the mountains. This course is gaining in popularity and is suitable for experienced and novice players alike and is a good location for a leisurely game.

Beginners and older people may find that one of the three 9-hole courses are are more suitable for them. The Dunloe and The Castlerosse are part of hotel leisure complexes but are open to non residents and the Ross course has a great reputation as a good course for novices.

Golfers who would like to make Killarney their base will find that not only have they the local courses but there a many more world class courses within about an hour’s drive. Ballybunion, which is about 40 miles away, has two links courses. The Old Course in Ballybunion is ranked among the top ten links courses in the world and is a favourite of Tom Watson and has been played by many celebrities including President Bill Clinton.

Other excellent courses in the area are Waterville, Tralee, Ceann Sibeal (Dingle) and Waterville.

Golfers visiting Killarney should book their accommodation well in advance at Hotels in Killarney or Killarney Bed and Breakfast especially during peak times.
