Necessary Skills For A Good Basketball Coach

When you walk down the streets and you happen to pass by one of the street basketball courts, you can’t help notice the groups of kids playing basketball. There is so much talent among those kids just waiting for someone to take notice, and many have the potential to make it to the top, but because they lack good basketball coaching, many of their dreams aren’t realized. There are some vital skills that you must understand and recognize if you want to become a good coach.

1: You must be adaptable to situations that come your way. Your team can be the best trained and most prepared, but everything changes when they get out onto that basketball court with the other team. Being able to look onto the court and see the whole situation and then completely change the strategy planned beforehand is a quality of a great coach. Trying to force the team to stick to a certain basketball plays and original strategies is what a poor coach does, while a good one changes plans if need be without hesitation.

2: Making quick and decisive choices is another quality of a good coach. When a coach knows the need to change strategy he will without a doubt. The statement “he who hesitates is lost” stands true with coaching decisions, because coaches cannot hesitate when instant decisions need to be made.

3. If you are going to be a coach and coach a team well, you must love, or at least like your team. Why bother with a team if you don’t even like the team members? A good coach knows that all, the training he gives to the team is only preparation for the real deal, no matter how many drills are run through. Giving their players what is best for them, loving them, and accepting when they fail are the signs of a good coach.

4: A good coach is realistic when it comes to the flaws and errors of his players, because he knows that no human is perfect. He knows that all team players are prone to messing up and making mistakes, and understands that he himself has weaknesses and not only his players.

5: The good coaches forgive their players when they make mistakes in the game and have complete confidence that their players will do the right thing the next time. They are willing to give their players a second chance to prove themselves at another opportunity. The coach will ignore the mistake made, even if the play had been perfect, and give them another opportunity. There are other plays in the playbook, so the player has other chances to make up for the error.

6) A good coach is persistent, never giving up on a player just because he doesn’t appear to have all the necessary skills. Basketball drills were invented for players who are very strong in one area but weak in many others, and a good coach is willing to give the player a chance to train the weaknesses out of himself. These are some of the things that will help you become a great coach.
