Rupert Murchoch’s Sky TV’s Football Rights

The British Premiere League is big business. Football is large in England. The Premiere League is the best achievement with groups like Manchester United, new money men Manchester City (now reported to be the richest club in the world thanks to their Multimillionaire Arab owner), Chelsea (Billionaire Russian owner), Armory, and now with the re-emergence of Liverpool under the helm of ex legend player Kenny Daglish.

The game in Britain is fast and exciting, the ability levels are amazing. Players from every area of the world grace the groups. The sole way to observe almost all of the live matches with English commentary is with Sky TV. There are 20 teams in the Premiere League and they play 2-3 times per week dependent on the schedule and dependent on Sky TV.

Sky TV pays the Brit Premiership millions each year for the rights to record all of the games. They really record each match at the weekend. The majority of the games start at 3:00pm on a Sat, with a game at 1:00 and 4:00 on a Sunday. There is one game on at 12:45 on Saturday and Sky generally shows this live and the 2 Sun. games. For this coverage Sky TV customers usually pay around 20 pounds each month.

But hang on a minute they record all the games, why do they not show the 3:00 pm games, and even let you follow your team? They are after all recording all of the games. The BBC does the same and they show the game highlights with Gary Lineker, Mark Laurenson and Alan Hansen every Saturday and Sunday night. It is a British institution.

But get this, not only do Sky record all the games, they sell the live rights and show the games live, each single one of them all around Europe and the remainder of the world. Many websites even stream the game live! How sickening is that? You live in the country of the Premiership and you cannot watch your game of choice?

Sky bitch the need to pay the Premiership a huge amount of cash for the games they are allowed to show, and it might cost too much for them to be lucrative if they were to show more games. The groups in the Premiership get a share out of the Television rights. Executives like Manchester United’s Alex Ferguson have come into contention with this system announcing Sky have too much power and can even dictate when games should be played. Ferguson claimed they are shoving in too many fixings too near to each other, particularly in the case of Western european matches.

Now new Western european satellite stations are marketing in on sky. They are taking the games that Sky beams out and adding their own foreign commentary in. They're then broadcasting these into pubs and houses in England. The commentary isn't in English, it could be Chinese, German or Italian, but at the least you can watch your game of preference. Sky even attempted to take the stations to court but lost out. Lets hope the price comes down and more game decision is made available for those among us who love our footy.
