Searching For The Perfect Golf Swing – The Mike Austin Golf Swing
Are you tired of hitting the golf ball short and crooked? I have an opinion on this and would like to share it with you. Learn the swing that produces long and straight drives, the Mike Austin golf swing.
Mike Austin crushed a drive back in 1974 that put him in the record books. He bombed an incomprehensible drive of 515 yards at the ripe old age of 64. Just knowing this should make you curious about his swing.
Mike Austin studied the sciences, and based his swing method on the things he learned. Mike was way ahead of most golf instructors because he had studied Kinesiology and was applying this to the golf swing. His understanding of physics helped complete the picture.
Mike was very critical of what people were being taught to do in the golf swing. Some of his core beliefs about the swing are in strong conflict with conventional golf instruction. Let me show you some areas where Mike totally disagrees with conventional golf teaching.
Mike believed that you should release the wrists immediately, at the start of the downswing. This is considered a big mistake by almost all golf pros. We are taught that we store energy by delaying the release until just before impact. Mike despises the idea that there is a “late release” and that this is the biggest lie told about the golf swing.
In the modern swing the lower spine stays centered. This will cause the head to move. In Mike’s pivot you shift laterally and turn, making a compound action. Swinging the lower spine this way allows a full and strong weight shift without moving the head.
The Mike Austin hand action is a twirling motion where the wrists are freely released through the hit. The flat left wrist is only a position at impact and should not be held onto. Holding on to a flat left wrist impedes the club. If you let the wrists react naturally you will gain club head speed. The club is free to whip through the hit zone.
The set up for the Mike Austin swing is unique, critical and quite brilliant. Mike has a very well thought out process to get you set up properly. When you finish the process you will be set up the same each time. When you do the set up accurately it will be much easier to produce a good Mike Austin swing. He set up should look a certain way. He gives you a step by step method of getting a good set up position. When done correctly you attain what Mike calls a two armed measurement. The precision of the set up makes performing the swing correctly much easier.
The Mike Austin method does not conform to you but rather you conform to it. It is truly a one swing fits all approach. We all have the same joints and the swing uses then to their design. When you learn to work your joints correctly during the swing your shots will soar long and straight. As Mike always said, “it is the most efficient way to hit a golf ball”.
If you want to build a Mike Austin golf swing I think Steve Pratt is who you should turn to. He is available for live golf lessons in Los Angeles or online golf lessons at his website Hit It Longer (.com).
