A life jacket is designed to help someone float and keep their heads above water wherever they may be swimming or near water. They are usually found in swimming pools, boats, airplanes, and large ships and are usually placed in areas that are within easy reach to both crew and passengers, and pedestrians that may come into contact with water.

It is very important to wear life jackets when out on the water, no matter what kind of activity people may be doing. They are buoyant by design, which means that they float without any kind of assistance from those that wear them.

Life jackets are composed of a core that is buoyant and then covered with strong and durable synthetic fibers. They are also covered in bright colors, mainly red or orange, and can be easily spotted by rescue personnel in case of a water related emergency.

Life jackets were first used by Norwegian sailors who built them out of cork or wood. They would be fashioned to sailors to protect them in case they fell overboard.

Life jackets today were thought to be invented by a British Lifeboat Institution inspector in 1954. Captain Ward filled a vest with cork, which served as the buoyancy material and worked well for anyone stuck in the water.

There are numerous types of life jackets on the market today which include a foam based core. Additional materials include deep water, air chamber models, underwater versions as well as specialized styles. Foam core ones are the easiest to make and wear, but the least buoyant. Air chambered ones are used on board large transport ships and aircraft.

These in particular are usually designed with vinyl and enclose inflatable air chambers. They provide much more floating capacity than foam life jackets. Deep water life jackets are designed to be under water for long periods of time and are known commonly as wetsuits or dry suits.
